Winter, I get bored. Since we travel about 7k miles a year, I always wanted a visual map of the campgrounds where we’ve camped so we can plan to visit or avoid some of the same as we pass through. I keep a spreadsheet with comments, but I wanted a map. Below is the result. To get to this point,

1. I had to format my spreadsheet with columns identical to the fields in my address book. (The hard part was to find and delete hidden charters like paragraph returns.)
2. Then I saved the spreadsheet as a CSV file.
3. I then created a new group in my address book called Campgrounds and imported the CSV file.
4. Finally, I used an app ContactMap (for Apple) to read and display the group. First I had to set it to show no pins for the entire address book then to display the Campgrounds entries with a green pin.

The pins are hot, so touching the pin opens all my info about that campground. Yes, this all took a while to figure out...2 days. I share this in case others are trying to do similar with their camping histories. No, I’m not offering to share our files.

Will you be at the CHR?
This would be a good presentation.
Is there a ContactMap for win machines?

This is pretty cool. I would like to get a better idea how it works.

It should be easier since windows works well with CSV files. However, I don’t know the apps available for mobile device other than IOS (Apple) since retiring from the (Windows bound) Federal government. When I search for apps that link maps to contacts, multiple ones come up.

No, we won’t be at the CHR this year...unfortunately.

Very cool, Mike. I have the same thing... in paper journal format, so it isn’t as present as yours. Always wondered how to get it into your format. Interesting app idea too.

That's awesome, great job and thank you for sharing!

If you use Google, you can also use google maps and save places, and pins. Which is what I use, link to an article explaining it-
https://www.truckcampermagazine.com/cam ... k-camping/

Works well, and is simple for someone like me. How ever I am going to look into your system. Happy Trails and Safe Travels

Very, very cool. I'd started with Google maps but gave up...this article would have guided me through the process. I like that the article explains how to include your comments, ratings and the url of campground.

I just tried the method in the article and imported the CSV file...it worked flawlessly. There are real advantages to using Google Maps since it provides more access to more information that any other mapping or GPS system It is also a good trip planner, so all can be done in one application. I have all my data there. If installed on the base map, the campgrounds become live with all the Google info (reviews, links, etc). If installed on a “new” map (user owned), then the pins are not tied to info Google already has stored...

The only disadvantage to Google is that they scan your data for marketing info...but then most people don't mind this if that is the cost of having so much power at your fingertips for free.

So now I have both IOS and Google versions and I’ll have to do a few more test drives to decide which to use...it’ll depend on how easily I can add new campgrounds.

Thanks again for the great article.

I have good luck with it, but only use google as i am not an apple fan. I do use redundant software though, just in case. It does make the trip planning easy, my map has stars and pins everywhere, just pick one and go. They do track data, im used to it so it does not bother me. I like the live parts, where I can read reviews see contact information, etc. It does pull data, I have an unlimited data plan and have never noticed a big jump. Just know if its running through your cell carrier it will use data.

It has completely changed the way I travel. NO worries I hope it helps others as much as it does us. Happy trails and Safe Travels
