Took a look at the A/C and I see the run cap. and it appears that one wire goes to the center, com, post and the other goes to the aft post with red wire. How did you actually mount the capacitor once it was hooked up? Did you cut the sheet metal cover for the wires to be routed out of the cover? Thanks.Dave

Jarhead, One of the youtube videos showed one guy just used a couple of big dabs of silicone to glue it inside the box Others show the use of large wire ties to hold it

Thanks. I may do the silicone as I don't see any place to use tie wraps.Dave

That's the best way. Once you get the cover back on, it's so tight in there, nothing's going anywhere.

Thanks. Once I'm back up there I'll figure how to run the wires. You all have been a lot of help.Dave

I want to get the SPP6 from Supco and and try starting my EU2000i gen to see if it will run my small 13.5 AC.

Gonna' be close. It should run it but it would probably run the 15K with a Micro Aire unit! You should take the time to watch the video on that device. It really is amazing!

I did watch all the videos, $12 is cheaper than $300. I'll try the $12 capacitor 1st and see how it works. thx

Put my spp6's on the a/c today. Started them running my 5.5 onan. I noticed after about 5 minutes of running they were pretty warm. I take it that is normal. The problem I was having was that sometimes when I started my 15k a/c on generator it would pop the 20 amp cb on the generator so we'll see what happens. in July when we head for Shippshy. I had always been told that 2600-2800 inverter gens. were the smallest you want to use. On my Sunnybrook 5er years ago I ran my a/c on a 2000i Honda and I burned out the a/c after about 4-6 years. So after that I got a Yamaha 2800i for occaisional use other then my 5.5 kw.Dave

I ordered my new capacitors a couple days ago. I will install them on both AC's. They may not let me run my 13.5 AC with my EU2000i generator, if not, at lease it may help the AC's last longer. I don't dare tell my wife I need a newer bigger generator : (

LOL I just read this exact same thing on a truck forum and wanted to see if someone here did it. I just ordered 2 today.

One thing to understand, is the hard start kit SHOULD kick off immediately after startup. That is what the relay on top of the capacitor is for to lock it out of the circuit when the motor starts. It should not affect the running of the compressor at all. For those that do not know WHY this works, remember that the electricity we use for residential (and RV) use is single phase AC current. Commercial units often use 3 phase power. Single phase power has alternating pulses of current that at 180 deg opposite each other, thus every
1/60 of a second the motor gets a pulse of AC current to start the motor. A 3 phase gets a pulse ever 1/20th of a second. The hard start kit actually makes it a 2 phase current, by delaying a pulse, until the motor get started, then falls back to single phase. If it did not fall back to single phase it would burn out the motor.

As for the post about delaying the fan motor start, I would caution that if that function fails, it can cause serious issues. For one, the evaporator will freeze up solid if left on long enough and can end up causing liquid refrigerant to get to the compressor valves, as opposed to in a gas form. Liquid in the valves will cost you a new compressor or new AC.

That fan motor uses very little current once it is running. On my AC the fan starts first, then a few seconds later, the compressor. That is the best way.

If I were you, I'd call Supco help line and see if this is normal (the heating up issue). Mine do not heat up. This could also be cause by a dirty sine wave (square wave) coming from the genset. It is my understanding, however, that Onan's are pure sine wave generators. You may have the SPP6's hooked up backwards (which would nullify their effect and cause the generator breaker to pop). I can run my 15K, since installing my SPP6's, on a 15 amp circuit without blowing the breaker, with the charger also on. (Everything else off or on propane)

I agree, it sounds like you either had compressor issues or generator issue before this mod.

I'm going to have Roland (Wisconsin-Knight) to install my capacitors, he doesn't know it : )

Talked to Sealed Unit Parts Co., Supco, this morning and their tech service told me the unit will get too hot to touch, approx. 150 degrees. Now my question I'm trying to get answered is how well the black foam insulation on the a/c will take the heat and if it will melt or possibly burn.Dave

Most any metal part on the roof can reach that temp on a hot summer day, just sittin there. I used to do AC work in the desert. You do NOT lay your tools on top of an AC rooftop unit. They will blister your hand instantly.

Point is pretty sure the foam is safe. But if in doubt wrap foil over the foam.
