While at the CHR, inspected one of the new toy hauler rig waiting to be shipped, and I noticed the small wheels/tires. 15" wheels! My first thoughts was - NO WAY. :-o
16" prob better, to allow G rated tires. :!:

Just got off the phone with OR customer service and they said they do not yet have a list of VIN's affected. They said it will probably be a couple of weeks so keep an eye on your mail.

Would be interesting to know how many tire blow outs and camper damage was a result of this oversight. I wonder if there's any recourse in that area as well? Hope you guys kept your records and receipts.

When I purchased and took delivery of my 319RLS last September there were no Weight Rating stickers on the coach. I first asked the salesman at the dealership, then Open Range. The first answer I received from Open Range was "they have to be there". After a week of looking in every compartment, everywhere excluding under the coach (per Open Range). I was finally sent the stickers with the Weight Rating for my VIN.

Am I ever glad I never actually applied them to my coach, now I won't have to peel them off, after this recall, to put the correct Weight Rating stickers on the coach.

Kinda makes me wonder if there might be some recourse. I purchased a trailer with XXXX load capacity now a year later HR lowers my rating by 200 or 500 or 1000 lbs. This is not what I paid for!! Not saying I would ever pursue it but it might kinda open up a can of worms

I'm pretty sure that the numbers on my HT31RGR Toy Hauler have changed more than that just since I bought it last summer. The papers the dealer had on display when I bought it said that it was ~8600lb unloaded (just 1k more than my previous trailer), and now they advertise 9600lb. I think they have upgraded the loaded weight rating by that much too.

The recall is going to upgrade 4K axles to 6K. If I'm doing the math right, with a 1600lb hitch weight and two 4K axles, my 9600lb "Toy Hauler" is overloaded if I add groceries to it, let alone put a Toy in the back. With 2 6K axles and a 1600lb hitch weight, 13,600lb is just barely over the 13,300lb loaded weight rating.

To be honest, I'm not sure that I would have bought it if I knew that it was this heavy. And I'm more than a bit upset that I've been towing this thing around with a potential overload condition.

John

got my recall today in the mail. Basically have to replace the Federal Motor Safety Standards decal with a new one that lowers the rated axle rating of my trailer from 5200lbs to 5080lbs. All other weights are unchanged. Not an overly large amount but sucks anytime you have to give up any potential cargo capacity. Fully loaded the other day I 8800lbs on the axles combined so I doubt I will ever get any higher than that.....

I got mine too but I couldn't tell what had changed. It is the axle rating that is different huh. Looks like we lose about 300# of cargo carrying capacity? Although not a lot it is not what I was sold. I am going to send in an email asking about this fact.

So, if we don't hear from them, our OR wasn't recalled? That kind of leaves us guessing...

I think you can run your VIN through the govt website to see if it applies. Or, call Highland.

Call HR Customer Service directly at 260-768-7771 and they will ask for the last 6 of your VIN to check.

Sure enough, the GAWR on my axles goes from 5200# each to 5080# each. Stickers being sent out today.

yes and no....if you notice, the GVWR did not go down. Simply the weight rating for each axles was corrected to reflect the axle rating for the axles they use. So basically the labels were incorrectly reflecting the axle rating but the GVWR was correct. So technically your not losing anything because in order to exceed the axle rating you will have exceeded your GVWR as well.....remember you have to subtract your hitch tongue/pin weight from your actual GVW to which is typically 15-20%. On my trailer my max GVWR is 10,995 lbs. Subtract 20% of that for the pin weight (2199 lbs) and that would give me a max weight of 8,796 lbs on the axles which is under the revised weight rating of 10,160 (5080 per axle). Even at 15% tongue/pin weight (1650 lbs) at the max GVWR it would give you approximately 9345 lbs over the axles which is around 91% of the axles rated load capacity. So to exceed the axle rating, you will exceed the GVWR in the process.....
