Eventually I want to upgrade my radio in my truck, to one with NAV, maybe. Could care less about sounds (radio wise) but more concerned with NAV part.

We are in the gold country part of CA on a trip and some of these roads I do not want to pull the 5th wheel on, so wondering if anyone has one of the Good Sam GPS units, what roads it recommends to go from say Fresno, CA to Groveland, CA. Actually the CG was in Buck Meadows. I have been there already, so no need for recommendations, I just wonder what the Good Sam RV friendly GPS would recommend.

GPS units tend to want to send us what IT thinks is the shortest route, but not necessarily the RV friendly one.

I have a Magellan GPS for RVs that I got at Camping world.
I will never own another Garmin, after it sent me down a hiking trail that went over a cliff in Yellowstone.

I would not use a NAV that is part of the radio in a vehicle when towing an RV because it is set for the vehicle only.

Make sure that you get a GPS that is good for RVs so you can enter your RV information.
The Magellan can be set for fastest time, shortest distance or most use of freeways which the Garmin could not.

I'm ready to toss my Magellan. It gets lost, has led me to nowhere, and is sloooow to accept spelling from the touch pad input. Frustrating when trying to change an itinerary mid-trip.

Most of the time the unit works well. Edits and trip deviations seem to confuse it.

Can someone that HAS one, program it from and to the points above I mentioned? I would like to know what roads it recommends. This is a test for them. I would appreciate this greatly. I am already aware of other gps limitations and will still most likely get an in dash one, bexause it has so many other features I want, but if a good sam rv unit sends me on the road I already know is not a good one then that will tell me a lot.

Tried to do it on my Magellan. Could not do just Fresno to Groveland. Had to do from current location to Fresno to Groveland. Then could list route only from current location to first destination Fresno, would not list route from Fresno to Groveland. Maybe somebody else can do point to point not including current location as start point.

Ok thanks for trying. If I do it on my phone or laptop they offer options but no explinations on different routes. Looking specifically to see which way it sends you in. The one section hwy 120 includes 6 miles of Priest Grade that I do not recommend. It's only 4% grade but has over 100 turns, some of them hairpin. We went down that but I think it would be real hard on a truck going up. It's a 1st and 2nd gear hill.

I wanted to see how the Good Sam units would send an RV.

Looked at that road to Groveland on Google Earth. Lots of turns and switchbacks. Be careful.

I already went down that road this last Sunday. It is paralled by the OLD Priest grade. The new one has over 100 turns but is 4% grade. The old grade was straighter but had a 17% grade, so I was wondering which way they recommended. I would hesitate to recommend going UP the new grade. We came in off the 99 via the 59 and 132. VERY windy also but no grade to speak of.
