In the second half of March we are heading to Corpus Christi, TX. We have an idea of our route from home near Milwaukee, WI to Memphis, TN. (Visiting friends there). From Memphis we could head toward Dallas or toward Houston en route to Corpus Christi. Is one of these routes clearly preferable to the other? It looks like the Houston route would use US 59. Is that up to Interstate standards?

Any advice welcome.

Yep 59/69 is a good route as is Dallas probably 45S. Plan to go thru either Dallas or Htown between rush hour and lunch so 10am or 2pm. Always a little backup, but not to bad if you are use to big city driving.

59 is sometimes called I-69. That is a proposed interstate. 59/69 goes thru few towns, some stop lights enroute. But not bad route to take. Closer one gets to Houston, say near Livingston, road opens up big, many lanes.

I45 good hwy, but as Curtis said, below Huntsville/Conroe, expect traffic. Can transfer off 45 to 59/69 in thick of downtown Houston. Better option could be take new toll road 99 loop from either 59 or 45 to 59. Think one can go online, get, pay 1 day toll pass to use 99.

If in Dallas area, not want to hit Houston areas, maybe consider I35 to Corpus, if so desire.

Good luck ,have good trip. And stay warm up there. :D

Mapquest gives us another option to get off I-30 in Mount Pleasant, take 271 to 155 to Tyler, TX. Then 69 down to Jacksonville, then following 79 to Rockdale and picking up 77 heading south to Corpus Christi.

Anyone have any experience there? Is it a good RV route or would we hate ourselves for doing it? Are those roads multilane or will we be holding up all the cars and 18 wheelers?

As always thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I haven’t research that route. But my comment is if want to cruise, make good time, staying away from slow downs, limits at smaller towns, do the interstates. Or better 4 lane US roads. Most times the maps clearly define road types, color, description or otherwise.

We find on our many trips “shortcuts”. Sure they are but not necessary time saved. One OK shortie we took while towing took us thru a small, narrow country road, low hanging trees, and 1 lane bridges! Wife freaked out when we saw an 18 wheeler barrelling toward us on this road. :-o
Had to pull off slowly, no shoulder, ditch on side.

Pretty drive tho. ;-)

We went from Rochester, MN to Corpus Christi in the fall and just took I35 most of the way (the route our GPS picked). The only difficult part was going through Austin because of heavy traffic which was mostly bad timing on our part.

Not exactly the route you're taking, but on a trip to Austin to visit our daughter, I think we were going west on 40 and we saw a 'shortcut' to skip Oklahoma City and head south towards Dallas ( I think it was hwy 69). That shortcut took f-o-r-e-v-e-r with all the towns with stop lights. Never doing that again.

We're firming up more of the route. On Day 3 we'll be overnighting in Rusk, TX. KOA person said they drive a 40 ft motorhome pulling a toad from Mount Pleasant to Rusk with no issues.

From Rusk to Corpus, we're looking at sliding over to I-45 and taking that down to Houston area. Taking the 290 bypass around until 59 and then 59 to 77 into Corpus Christi.

Anyone know if the 290 bypass is gonna give us any big problems around midday?

Thanks in advance,

What is this 290 bypass you referring to? Is it the I-610 loop?

My mistake! I didn't blow the map up for these bifocal eyes. It's 8, the Sam Houston tollway. We'd have to take that one because you can get a iPhone app for the tolls. On the Grand Parkway 99 you can't use the phone app, you have to have a transponder.
