Need suggestions for campgrounds in Pictured Rocks area, prefer ones that take reservations. Going the last of July 2018.

Thanks

Great area, not many campgrounds with FHU to choose from. We stayed a bit south at Jack Pine Lodge...classy but homey. Very nice, great bar and restaurant. I guess it’s mostly for hunters and snow vehicles, but very good infrastructure. No TV. It’s a nice drive north or south to the shores.

BTW...when the black flies are in season, there’s no place to hide in the UP.

We are from Green Bay, Wisconsin. A lot of people stay at OTTER LAKE CG It is located just South of Munising. My daughter-in-laws father lives in Munising and he always recommends this cg. Be sure to stop at the welcome center right in town. They have a lot of information about the area. We were there last summer with another couple and walked into many waterfalls areas. Be sure to have a pasty at the BEAR TRAP INN just Northeast of town. You will find them in most of the restraunts. Don't buy Dobbers pasties. The worst in the U.P. Google U.P. Pasty. If you have time go to MUNISING BEACH just NE of town. It is one of the best beaches in the US. The state park has many walk into lookouts over looking the lake. After you leave there travel South to Manistique. Just West of there is a state park called INDIAN LAKE SOUTH. For a $9 vehicle entry fee (don't matter how many people are in the vehicle) you can go on a Tom Sawyer raft. It is driven only by the people on board. If you have kids they can also drive it. Google "KITCH-ITI-KIPPI. If you still have time go East about 90 miles and visit Mackinac island. You need to ferry boat to the island. No vehicles are allowed on the island. Bicycles and horse driven buggys. Google "MACKINAC ISLAND". Be sure to stop in Green Bay and see the Packer Stadium. They give tours of the stadium. They have a newly built sports area across the road with all kinds of activities for the kids. Bring a football they have a official size football field in the park. Don't forget to find a place with fresh cheese curds. Only get them fresh and not refrigerated. As you travel throughtout Wisconsin ask if they have fresh cheese curds. After eating them you will know why they call us cheese heads. If you would like more information PM me and I can research. Good luck and safe travels. Jerry

We were there this past summer after CHR. We stayed at Munising Travel Park. It is a city run campground and is right on Lk. Superior. In fact, our spot backed up to the lake. Unfortunately, there was a mistake with the reservation and they had us for 2 nights instead of 3. Site was not cleaned, trash in fire pit, could not be bothered that there was a mistake made. This place stays busy in spite of themselves. We chose to move on and would not recommend them.

But --- Pictured Rocks were cool, and on August 25 we woke up to 35 degrees! We get a kick out of watching the temps recently during the frigid cold! Those are hearty folks!

Jerry forgot to mention Bay furnace campground. I think it’s state or federal. No electric, but if you can get by without air you should be good for a few days. It is the UP with lots of air coming off Lake Superior. Kitch iti kippi is in Palm Book State Park. On the way to Munising we’ve stayed at Gladstone city park, pretty nice. We’ve also stayed at Menominee city park across the river from Marinette in Menominee. That one is very clean full hook up. If your lucky enough you might catch them dumping a navy ship into the river. They build them just across the river from the park. Further north you will see wells state park. That’s a nice park to camp at as well. Oh if by chance you are looking for something near Oconto, Wisconsin there’s a great county campground on the bay of Green Bay called North Bayshore.

Thanks for the info. Our group decided to make reservations at the Pictured Rocks KOA, so we would know we would have a spot, everything else was booked or first come.

Thanks again to all the people at this great site.

Have stayed at the Wandering Wheels CG (it is now a KOA again) in Munising several times. It is adjacent to an ORV trail (noisy) on the east side of the CG and the interior wooded sites can be challenging. There was rarely any one in the office and had to go to the motel nearby to pay. Hopefully things are different now that it is in the KOA family again. FYI, there are currently only two KOA's in Michigan's UP, the other being in St Ignace. Woodland Park in Grand Marais on the east end of Pictured Rocks is great but they do not take reservations.
