Has anyone replaced their portable Island with another Island? I'm looking for something more light weight and has a overhanging top so I can put a couple chairs under it for guest. Anyone with pictures?

Earl, open the doors and unscrew the top, take a measurement of the size top you would like and go to a major building materials dealer or counter top business and they will make any size and color you would like. Jerry

Elaine did not like portable island at first but is quite fond of it now. It does seem rather heavy as noted by original poster. We have installed additional tie downs to prevent it from breaking loose and being a "loose cannon" on rough roads.

Be careful of the size you make your new top. Stowing the island when traveling may be a problem.

There is link on our site where someone add a extension that you can put up or put down when needed.

bob sue, the portable island is higher than our dining table so in reality the island could be 3 feet wider overlapping the table.

I already have half of those fold tables. I'm looking for a island similar in size with drawers and cabinets but in aluminum instead of heavy wood. Oh yeah I want a top flap to bring up for more counter space.
I will post when I find one.

The vast majority of the weight in the islands is the top material. Synthetic Quartz counter tops, (Corian, or Silstone ), are about a 1/2" tick and area usually glued to a likewise thick sheet of particle board. The base cabinet is made from light weight plywood.

I think it would be cheaper to remove the original countertop and replace with a wider one that overlaps about 12" so I can put a couple stools under it. I'm thinking butch block design.

Go to IKEA. They have several pre-cut butcher block countertops - 6' and 8' lengths I believe. Some is solid wood, some is veneer or laminate. You could probably find one that is lighter weight there also.

Went to Ikea on Monday, didn't find anything interesting.

I think you got the right idea there.
I have a floating island in our guest house that has a flip up counter top. I really like it. Got it at lowe’s about 15 years ago. But the concept is the same. I would love to have a counter top. I did see a floating island with the swing up counter in an Open Range on some YouTube video review but I think it was in a TT Roamer. If you find the furniture manufacturer you might be able to get a replacement for that unit??? But by far the least expensive would be to add the counter of your choice to the unit you already own.

It's not lighter but one option would be to contact Open Range and see about getting the one they put in the 297rls. It has fold up extensions for chairs to go under.

robhill1965, that's a possibility but I think that table is the regular height of a dinning table and not as tall as the portable island.
I could put taller wheels on it I guess. I think I will look in about switching my existing portable island counter top out for one with hinges on one side. the existing portable island is a tight squeeze between the recliners and dining table. I would need to unscrew the dining table and move it over 1"-2". Something to think about.
