When set up on a permanent site is it necessary to have a
battery hooked up or will the 12 volt converter supply enough
voltage and amps to operate all the systems without harming
anything? The slides and landing gear will not be operated.

Assuming you are plugged into AC power, and do not operate your slides or landing gear, it should be sufficient to run all other 12 volt systems in the unit.

I agree, unless you have some 12vdc device beyond the normal accessories in the trailer, the converter should be more than capable of handling the load.

I would make sure your battery leads are supported so the positive one doesn't contact anything. Besides having stored electricity the battery acts as a shock absorbor between your converter and your electrical system.Dave

Just curious... why would you want to disconnect the battery? If the power goes out, your fridge and hot water heater will be worthless until power is restored.

I usually turn off my battery at the switch if I'm going to be connected to A/C for extended periods of time. I'm old school and don't want to overcharge my battery from the converter and yes I know it's not suppose to do that.

That was my thought initially... In fact, I think I started a thread a long time ago about it. In the old days, I boiled batteries in my Fleetwoods by keeping them plugged in too long. Around here, the guys said leave it plugged in... the smart chargers take care of it. Three years in and only unplugged for travel, I'd have to say they're right.

Our rig is at a storage yard that provides electricity, so all last winter I kept it plugged in, battery connected, and a oil electric heater inside to keep things from freezing. Never had to add water to the battery once. If one does disconnect the battery, I would pull it and hook it up to a battery tender in the garage.

I guess it would be OK especially if there are no large current draws however I would still prefer to have a battery in the system to sort of balance the system and keep the voltages in a more steady state.
The overall 12v system is designed to be used with with a battery. I would not deviate from that

The reason I asked the question is due to the fact that I walked by the front of
the trailer a couple of days ago and smelled the dreaded rotten egg odor--yeah--
overcharged battery :-| --second time in 7 years-- I keep my trailer in a covered
shed --plugged in with water hooked up and fridge running--I also cook my breakfast
in the trailer every morning -- so I will try it without the battery for a while until I decide
to take a trip--which brings this comment--my DW's health has put our travel plans on
hold for now and the near future so I don't anticipate any trips for a while.

I would worry about your converter as a few people here have had the oem converter go bad on them.Dave

I checked my battery water in spring of 2014. RV sits plugged in all the time at my mountain property.
I forgot to check battery last fall, or this spring. I finally got around to it last weekend. It needed water, but it was still above the plates. I would not have wanted to go much longer as it would have exposed the plates.
it took a less than a quart between all the cells.

battery is just cheep lead acid battery, its 3.5 years old, i expect to have to replace it next spring anyway.

I have actually replaced the oem battery and the oem converter
at the same time about 3 1/2 years ago. All I will be running is the
lights and the fridge , propane monitor and the CO-2 monitor.

I've been waiting to upgrade to double batteries once the original one needs replacement, so of course it is still hanging in there.
