2.5 years of mostly trouble free trailering, and as I get ready to head to my first CHR today, the big slide makes a horrible grinding noise and shudders to a stop. Nothing blocking it. I can get it to inch forward by pressing the side button for a second and then it makes another grinding noise. If I can get it in, should I try to get to Shipshewana? Or see if the dealer can look at it? I await your excellent advice....

If you have CHR rally reservations, come on down. Have a person on each side of the slide and apply an even push while a 3rd person pushes the 'in' button. When you get to your site, a person on each side (inside this time) applying even push...button 'out'. In the worst case, you can buy a gearbox in Shipshewana and there are enough folks around who have replaced them who can show you how it is done. In a best case scenario, the Highland Ridge techs show mercy and come to the rescue.

Had slide not work on previous 337RLS. We were able to change cables after Open Range sent parts free. Elaine was worried about slide opening while driving so I put two sets of tie-down straps all around the 5th wheel so that it would not open. I did not think this necessary but Elaine did, so I did.

To keep the slide in, you can cut 2x4s to fit/wedge inside between the wall and slide side.
Get the slide in and go. All the help will be there.

I made it! Got the side in by myself. No issues with it on the trip, though not impressed with the roads. Now I'm set up at my spot, though haven't tried to put the slide out. I'm surrounded by a ton of giant class As, a C, and a couple fivers. None of them OR, but I'm early. Also, holy crap state road 5 is busy!

When a gearbox fails is it necessary to secure the slide with straps or wedges when traveling?

Usually no. When a gearbox fails, a few of its teeth are sheared to the point of no longer grabbing, but the rest of the mechanism is still intact and functioning. On rare occasions though, pending the problem, a slide could deploy somewhat. I just read that someone's pin between the motor and gearbox sheared and that slide slid out a little during travel.

Best way to test if a gearbox or other components fail is to push the slide without pushing the button. If it moves, then it should be chocked for travel.

Last year our pin sheared between motor and gear box. We drove it home about 75 miles with no movement. Couldn't push it out when we got home - had to take the fascia off and use the flexi-tool and a drill to run the slide out.

Someone will beable to help you. Most likely not only someone but a few members. We are in the site next to the open pavilion near the fire pit. Jerry , second in command
