Thanks Handi, now I can replace my 30 year old plastic gas cans. Amazon has them also.

I left my 5gal container of diesel outside and it rained. The container had a closed off spout but I not sure if any rain might have gotten in. How do you tell if there is water in the diesel? I don't want to put it in my truck and find out the hard way.

I thought all modern diesels have water separators in the fuel system.
My Ford does. A little water in the fuel just fills the separator tank more quickly.

The water will settle to the bottom. Carefully pour out the diesel so as to not mix the water. Stop pouring if and when you see water.

One subject you need to concern yourself with is fungus when you use cans to store diesel. If you don't use an additive like Sta-Bil for diesel or some other anti fungal/anti gel, especially in cold weather, additive you can end up with a black gel type fungus. It is caused by moisture in your fuel. It can get bad enough to plug filters and fuel lines. You need to check your cans periodically when they get close to empty and that's when you can see it. I rinse mine out with a little gasoline to break it up and flush it out. And use an additive in your vehicle's tank. I use Lucas or Diesel Kleen. Diesel Kleen comes in 2 versions. One for winter and specifically anti gel and one for summer which has no anti gel. There are many out there so just do your research.Dave

I rotate all my fuels often enough so not worry about it going bad.

I would not use that fuel under any circumstances. ANY water in diesel is a very bad thing and although most modern trucks have a separator I would not take the chance. The injectors will suffer from any water that gets by and its just not worth taking the chance.

I'll have to find some place legal to dump it.

Most waste oil haulers around here will allow it in their oil recycling, maybe you could find someone with a waste oil furnace, they require good filtration and could probably utilize the fuel.

I found a funnel that filters out the water when pouring fuel thru it.
