After years of frustration manoeuvring around the pumps of gas stations, I installed the tank pictured. It is 37 US gals/140 litres, which translates to less than 300 lbs full, and combined with the trucks on-board tank, gives us up 600 miles between fill-ups. This means a full days travel without the stress and time loss of fuel stops. The tank in not permanently fastened, but sits on multiple strips of weather-stripping, and is held by three ratcheting straps. No movement in 15,000 miles, and alone, took me thirty minutes to install. The fuel enters the main tank thru an insert (available separately) easily installed in the rubber filler neck. A small fuel line goes to the insert thru an existing drain hole in the bed. You have an option of allowing the gravity feed to flow in to the main, replacing fuel as consumed, or open tank valve as desired. The onboard gauge will show full until the aux. is MT.
Does not block view, weight is manageable considering my 2500 lb pin weight, and allows me freedom to purchase fuel at competitive outlets, usually removed from the interstates. Tank weighs about 35 lbs, and can be removed in 3 or 4 minutes. I will be moving the tank in a couple of weeks to new tow vehicle. Cost from RDS, including free shipping, less than $450. Direct sale recommended over Northern Tools, etc, who charge shipping. May never pay for itself in fuel savings, but is worth double in convenience.
My tow has never been more pleasant.

Awesome idea. I'm in the market for an auxiliary tank... Krash posted a solution in another thread yesterday. I like the non-permanent idea of this solution.

We did a similar RDS set up. But with tool box on top. I agree greatest travel thing we have done.
We can go around 800 miles towing.
Nice to just have it strapped in. Be nice to remove it when not towing if need the room.

Great idea, to strap it in. :!:
But would you be worried someone might steal it, fuel and all? One sharp knife and gone.

I worried just over trailer hitch being stolen. Plenty desperate folks out there. So I chained/locked the hitch to the rails. Drilled hole in one of the pins that secure the legs to the rails and put lock there, with chain snaked up to the hitch and secured to same lock. I would hate to be on road trip, stop at some offsite place, gone for a few hrs and then find hitch gone. Then what? Of course, the crooks will have a will, a way, and figure how to get to something, one way or another. Deterrents makes them think, before any attempts.

Of course the easiest way is to have good anti-thief alarm system on the truck, thereby protecting it all. Crawl in back, shaking, alarm!

Towing up the the CHR with a friend who has a 40gal auxiliary tank made me realize how much it is a needed item. I am having to find the nearest flying J/Pilot so that I can fill up every morning. I like the one you installed I was looking at the 30 gal here: http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Handy/ ... _tank.html
because the filler neck is inside the tool box.

Answered my quote,

This tank comes with a label that they are for diesel only. If you are going to use gasoline in them and want to have a label to replace the diesel fuel only you will need to contact the manufacturer and request a gas only label. Auxiliary tanks are designed for either diesel or gas (gas cant be use in California). You will need to check with your local DOT for hook up. Gas can be used in the auxiliary tank, it cannot be used to transfer or gravity feed.

I'll ck more!

Another ?,
I have an 01 GMC, GASSER, considering an aux gas tank. Found out the alum tanks for diesel will NOT be shipped to calif. (Oh to live in calif) I can buy an 18 gal gas tank but wondering how to plumb it in. Federal law says no gas by gravity flow. Diesel filler "necks" are large then gas so that leaves out some of those options. Any ideas?
