My father is 89 and has bad hearing. He had some hand me down hearing aides that seem to work for awhile but had trouble with keeping batteries charged.
presently he uses a cheap amplifier on one ear, I think it cost like $30 off the internet. It seems to work ok to hear the TV when the TV is full volume. I suggested t omg sister that lives nearby that always there to help (I'm 1600 miles away).
I asked why can't we just get him fitted for his own hearing aides and she said they are too expensive and he would just lose them anyway.
I'm kind of at a cross road not know what I can do. When I call Dad and has to remove his amp and then he can't hear me talking on the phone. We just exchange a couple words and just give up trying to have a conversation.
My question is there has to be something out there (hearing aides) that cost somewhere between his $30 amplifier to $2000 hearing aides.
Does anyone have any idea what's how there that might help my dad hear better without spending a lot of money for something he may lose?

Maybe look into ClearCaptions for your Dad. My wifes father has hearing problems from being around military jets for 22+ years.
If we weren't so financially strapped this year, it would be on our list for him.

They don't have a land line phone just cell phones that they can't even hear someone calling them.

Earle, is he a veteran? The VA will help with that problem. If his problem is like mine he probably hears but can't understand. They make some really nice stuff these days but it is really pricey. The TV maybe can be solved with a headset plugged into the external speaker jack but the phone is another issue.

I bought a couple of used Sony RF-970 900mhz headsets off Ebay for me and the wife that solved the TV problem. You can't hear our TV because the volume is off.

X2 on above. Was he in the military? The VA gave me my hearing aids and I get all my batteries and parts free from them. Regardless of what you hear the VA as a whole is a great organization. Kind of like the forum, the folks that have any complaints don't say much and the few with problems say the most.Dave

Earl there is a product called TV Ears that will help--they are a wireless head set--
rechargeable with a docking station and a volume control where the TV sound can be muted
so as not to disturb anyone else. Google TV Ears for more info.

Here ya go---

https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywo ... wj7c_b_p37

I might also suggest that you get the ones with the more robust ear muffs
rather than the light weight ones as they are easy to break.

I second the VA. They've been fantastic to my dad.

If the VA option does not work out, these "Personal Sound Amplifiers" are similar to "hearing aids" but at a much better price ($214 per ear).
https://www.etymotic.com/consumer/perso ... n-qsa.html
They are less expensive than "hearing aids" because doctors are not involved, but they use similar technology.
BUT they are small and use those tiny hearing aid batteries and may be hard for him to change the battery and to insert into his ear(s).
(They were too small for my father in law to deal with, but now that you mention the VA and TV Ears, we will try those, thanks for the tips!)

My father was not a Vet, but I will look into the TV ears since that's we they both spend most of their time because they can't walk. I think they both are just months away from going into assistant living. Thx for everyone's help, I got several possibilities now.

The TV ears might be your best option. I asked my mother-in-law and she said yes, hearing aids are crazy expensive. Hers were over 1000 a piece.

I wear a hearing aid. And yea, they expensive. Shocking expensive! Gotta ask, why? Chips in them not expensive. Pennies.

Getting those online aids may work but beware the sound output strength might not be enough so subject can hear. And the behind the ear types are more powerful than the in the ear types.

When I get fitted for hearing aid, the audiologist/tech would say this is the one you need. I ask is there another more powerful one? Yes there is but this one right for you. No thanks I take next one up. It’s a lil more expensive. I don’t care, give me what I want and don’t you dare program it for lower sound. Read my lips.

My reason- need not turn volume up, better sound clarity (try turning your TV real louder, see if hear better). And because lower sound output, battery lasts longer, lots longer.

Question, why can buy glasses, specs cheap? And insurance covers glass s, but NOT aids

I think a behind the ear brand that's not too expensive. If he drops it I want him to be able to find it.

Earl, if y'all are thinking of getting him Hearing aids, Costco and Sams Club both have aids that are less expensive than other places.
