Back when I was half-heartedly considering a new RV, Grand Design was at the top of my list. I'd never heard of Open Range then, and was enamored by the GD brand and reports of stellar customer service, but they didn't have a floorplan that blew me away, and they were only around for two years at the time. Then I saw my first Open Range and didn't look back.

But, I've enjoyed watching the GD brand grow, and check them out regularly (though still not thrilled with the floorplans, but the exterior of the Reflection is gorgeous). Also loved the brand because they reminded me how OR used to be as an independent. Well, GD is no longer independent. Winnebago just bought them out. Will be interesting to see how things go now...

I was looking at Grand Design to replace my Open Range. But I could not get past the dark "gothic" interiors.

Me too. I almost bought a GD. Got a dealer right in my hometown. But that dark interior & plastic sinks was a deal breaker. That said, I'm very happy with my OR. Safe Travels.....David

Mark, the sale happened about nine months ago.

And what is funny - our Roamer has a much, much darker interior than our two last trailers. And plastic sinks. But the floor plan we needed was available at the time were looking.

Nowadays - if I were looking for a new rig, I would probably cross-shop both Highland Ridge and Grand Design and pick the plan that fit us best.

Seems like if you can float the finances for 5 years and have even a small share of the market, someone will come along and buy you out. I know it's more complex than that but how many times have we see this play out? I hope GD is able to maintain their high level of quality and customer service. Those seem to be left out of the take-over formula I've seen. I suppose that in the end, it all comes down to money 'cause it's just business.

The word that I am hearing on the street is that Winnebago has been good about taking care of the product even post warranty. I have read that has not been the case with the OR purchase by Thor. I still haven't see an GD floor plan that has me interested enough to jump.

Everyone seems to forget that Grand Design was started by a bunch of ex=Keystone RV lads. So those of us who have owned Keystone RVs in the past know where they are from, and eventually know where they will go. GD is the hot item out there from what I have read and saw, but there have been a lot of 'hot' items over the years we have owned RVs, I'm not one for keeping up with the Joneses. We put a year or two into research before we make a new camper move. Have always done this, and with the handy dandy intraweb, it's now easier than ever. ;) But you have to wade through all the pissed off people who vent all their illegitimate frustrations only, to see the ones that truly have major issues. Then again one owner's speed bump is another owner's Everest.

Seemed to me the GD fifth wheels don't have the ground clearance, especially around the dump pipes. As much as I boondock, that's important to me. Did see they were using better tires, G rated last I looked at one. It also matches the color of my truck much better (but that's not a very good reason to switch).

I do like the TH floor plan with the small Garage under the bed in back. Nice living space up front and don't lose any living space like most toy haulers. It appears to fit the bill if all you have is a golf cart etc. I haven't found another floor plan like this. I want to be able to take a small toy, have all my living space and pull the 5th wheel. Do anyone know of another manufacture to compare that has a similar idea?

Not that I've seen. My buddy has the Momentum and I do like the way theirs is laid out. Another buddy has dragged me through about 50 of them looking to replace his 427 and nothing compares to the Momentum in terms of that layout. Their front living room is beautiful. They thoroughly enjoy the entire rig. Except for the awnings... they say they need to go out further.

We jumped ship from our OR last spring, bought a Reflection 337, and follow the GD owners FB page and forum pretty regularly.

So far there does not seem to be ANY drop in their customer service and they are maintaining their independence pretty well. Amazing when someone posts an issue on the FB page the GD brand manager usually responds in under an hour (when he is tagged) and the problem is covered. Not bashing Open Range / Highland Ridge at all and not trying to promote an SOB on this great forum but GDs customer service is unbelievable for any company.

Maybe we are just lucky (I really think just realistic of what a model RV is) but both our Open Range (2012) and Grand Design (2016) have been great almost fault free units.

We are looking at the 337 GD also, to replace a totaled 337 OR, what are you towing with?

Originally towed with a GM 2500 Gas and while it did ok we knew we were over limits. Came across a 2015 GMC Denali Duramax 3500 DRW (17,500 miles) at Thanksgiving last year that I stole for $40K. Amazing difference, I wouldn't go back to gas (or less than a DRW).

We are looking at the same floor plan. GD makes it in both their Solitude and Momentum brands with the Solitude being the more "traditional" looking and the Momentum being the more "dark" edgy look.

Keystone has recently come out with a Montana with the same floorplan. They are the 380TH and 381TH (only difference in the two is the fridge). It is several thousand $ cheaper but doesn't have near the storage (basement) space. The Montana does have more interior headroom especially in the shower, but less overall living space.
