My wife called me this morning to tell me the fridge is not working in our 272RLS TT (she's staying in it while she works in OK for the winter). The light is on so it is getting power but it's not cold. There was a little puddle of water in front of it on the floor. I didn't think to ask if she could hear the compressor trying to run.

Any ideas on stuff she can try before calling in a mobile tech? I am thinking of having her switch to the gas setting instead of auto. And also flipping off the breaker for a bit then back on.

I would try it on Gas before digging any further into the problem and I would most certainly Flip it Off too. :lol4

FYI: It has been cold there (lows of 10F).

Sorry I don't remember the exact science but the "evaporative-process" (or whatever the exact term is) refrigerators do not work properly when the temperatures are in the cold range, and this might be what you are experiencing.

Over the years we have left units in place, had a cold spell hit while we were away, only to return and find that ice cream, frozen foods, etc., had thawed, even though the interior of the unit was colder than what you would have while it was occupied. Not much you can do about it.

We switched to residential-type refrigerators a few years ago and these are much less prone to the cold/melting phenomenon.

Norcold offers a "heater kit" for use in cold temps,

https://www.amazon.com/Norcold-634913-C ... heater+kit

I have recently also heard this, i sent an email to Norcold but have yet to receive a reply. I did some googling and read it does seem to be a known issue, i read other forums where folks have used a light bulb and thermo cube. I have no idea though.

Make sure 12 volt is working. Will not work on propane or 110 without 12 volt.

Power was fine. My wife had a tech take a look and he suggested running it on gas for a few days to see if that clears up the problem. He thought there might be a blockage in the coils.

Norcold recommends using the gas part. Supposing does better job than electric heat pad.

Ammonia does funny things when frig exterior, coils cold. Gas absorbent changes, lose cooling affect.

If that cold, maybe put foodstuff in ice chest, open lid, put outside. Deep freeze, right?

The problem with that idea is where our rig is now the temperature can vary from 10F to 50F over the course of a day.

The absorption cooling system is dependent on a temperature differential between the Boiler (bottom tank) and the coils above. The warm Ammonia rises and condenses as it cools, which causes the cooling effect in the Fridge and Freezer. If the Electric heat source can't overcome the cold ambient air, you will end up with little or no Ammonia circulation and minimal cooling.

Hi Jordan,

Yes, we do recommend having the Cold Weather Kit put on if you are going to be using it during the winter months. The part number is #634914.

Hello Jordan,

You unit does not have a cold weather kit built into it. You can purchase one and have your dealer install it and this will help when you are in below freezing temperatures.

If you have additional questions, please contact us.

Thank you,

Yeah, we'll have to look at one of those kits. How difficult is it to pull out the fridge to get at the back or can you get at it from those outside vents?

BTW, now that the weather has warmed up in OK the fridge appears to be working just fine.
