Anyone know if I get pulled over if I'm held to the GVWR of the trailer in any calculations they make or actually the trailer weight current? I've seen thm with portable scales. If they use GVWR I'd be over but I will be towing like 1500 lbs min lighter and then would be legal...

Most CHP commercial officers will not stop 5th wheel that are privately operated unless the see something wrong with your rig. I can't say the same for other agencies.

Typical law enforcement uses what the trailer is rated for (GVWR on the frame label), not the actual weight, unless you are over gross. CA uses the GVWR of the vehicle and trailer to determine what class of license you will need, if you are a resident of CA. I'd make sure you have the license needed for the weight you tow, I hear fines can be 4 figures. See: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/conne ... OD=AJPERES

And only drive 55mph in the right lanes.

DON'T worry about driving "out of class"...... Just follow the above advice and you'll be safe.

Even that is not rock solid. I usually tow at 60 here in CA, when on a decent enough highway to not give me whiplash. Of course the LEGAL limit IS 55. Just for the record, in I-5, the right lane can be horrid. It's nice to know the Governor only stole 30% of the new tax bill meant for roads, to put towards his useless high speed train.

I REALLY can't believe that someone in this forum would actually encourage you to break the law. :-o You may be "safe" from being pulled over by following all other traffic laws, but if you should happen to have any significant accident and you are operating with the wrong class of license, expect to send some time in jail and dealing with a lawyer for many years, as the other person picks your net worth to pieces. A simple call to a CA law enforcement agency and ask what the penalty for driving "out of class" is, may put your mind at ease, or give fair warning. Again, this license class thing is only applicable if CA is your domicile state. If not, no worries, as your domicile state determines the licensing laws you have to abide by.
